One of NNDC's core priorities is the creation of vibrant town centres throughout the sub-region. By this, we mean attractive and accessible centres that offer a range of entertainment options and act as a focus for shopping and other commercial activity.
Over the last 12 months, there have been some momentous developments in Corby and real progress in drawing up action plans for other towns.
In Corby, construction of the first phase of Land Securities' £35m Willow Place shopping centre is well advanced and expected to be completed in Autumn 2007. Such is Land Securities' confidence in the town that it is proposing a further 300,000 sq ft of retail space including an 80,000 sq ft department store. Leisure and restaurants will also feature heavily in this development which is scheduled for completion in 2011.
In Kettering, the delivery of a Town Centre Masterplan is underway with EDAW, the leading urban regeneration consultants, looking at the best way to restructure elements of the existing centre to create a more modern and attractive destination for residents and visitors alike.

In Wellingborough, residents are currently having their say on how they would like to see their town centre develop. Public consultation began in late February 2007 on growth proposals, which include replacing the Swansgate Centre, building a new campus for Tresham Institute, an innovation centre and hotel. It is envisaged that the amount of floor space dedicated to retail space will double by 2021.
Elsewhere in the sub-region, funding is in place for town square improvements in Raunds with a start on site expected in Summer 2007. NNDC is also involved in establishing clear and viable visions for Irthlingborough and Thrapston town centres in conjunction with East Northamptonshire Council.
