Winners have now been announced in the ‘Postcards from the Future’ competition launched by the North Northamptonshire Joint Planning Committee earlier this year.
As part of its Issues consultation the Joint Planning Committee wanted to prompt discussion about how the area should develop over the next 20 years. Young people were asked to design a postcard to themselves from 20 years into the future, drawing and writing about how their local places and way of life had changed.
After receiving dozens of entries from across North Northamptonshire, the best ones were shortlisted and then judged by the Chairman and Vice Chairman of the Joint Planning Committee, Councillors Graham Lawman and David Brackenbury. All of the final six are pupils at the Ferrers Specialist Arts College in Higham Ferrers
First prize went to Georgina Kenton, who wrote about Rushden train station being re-opened and climate change leading to animals such as elephants being re-introduced! Georgina’s drawing also showed a Rushden University. She wins a £50 national book token.
There were two Runners up – Ellen Boucher and Ellie Nelson-Coles who each win £20 Odeon gift vouchers, both writing about the uses of new technology and the effects of global warming.
Also Commended for their entries were Hannah Neal, Elizabeth Wakefield and Lucy Elliott
The prizes and certificates will be awarded at the school assembly on Wednesday 28th September by the Chairman of the Joint Planning Committee, Councillor Graham Lawman. Councillor Lawman said “We have been very impressed with the high standard of many of the entries and the imaginative ideas coming through. It was a difficult job to choose the overall winner but we did have a lot of fun reading through the shortlisted entries. Thank you to everyone who entered and we continue to welcome ideas and comments about how the area could change for the better over the long term.”
The Joint Planning Committee will be consulting people again later this year, setting out how the new Plan for the area is shaping up and asking for feedback on some of the issues that still need to be tackled. A draft Plan will be published in 2012 for formal comment.
