Kettering Zero Carbon Homes Scoop Top Industry Accolade

13 July 2010

Two zero carbon homes to be built in Rothwell and Kettering have beaten off fierce competition to win the Innovation Award for Building Technology at the prestigious British Homes Awards (BHA) held on Thursday 1st July in Central London.

The VELUX Model Home 2020 project aims to set an example of sustainable, zero carbon homes that are both appealing and comfortable for the homeowner while remaining affordable to purchase. VELUX is working on the properties in partnership with Kettering Borough Council, the North Northants Development Company (NNDC), HTA Architects and Willmott Dixon.

The scheme was selected for the innovation accolade by a panel of industry experts, who commended its original use of building technology and the exciting way it captures natural daylight and ventilation to minimise energy consumption. The properties were hailed as an exemplary benchmark for the design of future sustainable homes.

Now in their fourth year, the annual British Homes Awards recognise excellence in British building design, and champion innovation and change in the way the industry designs and builds our future homes.

When joining the architects on stage to collect the award, Caroline Wardle from North Northants Development Company, said: “It’s great to be involved in this project which really puts North Northamptonshire on the map. The delivery of sustainable projects is something that is being strived for nationally so to be leading the way is a tribute to VELUX and all of the partners that have worked to achieve this. It’s fantastic to have such a forward thinking company such as VELUX in our region. They are thought leaders on sustainable design and this award highlights their commitment to creating homes that meet the aspirations of the 21st century homeowner.”

Kevin Brennan, Head of Sustainability at VELUX Company Ltd, comments: “At VELUX, we strongly believe that it is possible to build bright and well ventilated zero carbon homes that homeowners will want to live in and that remain affordable to build. We are delighted that our pioneering and ambitious Model Home 2020 project has been recognised in these prestigious awards.”

More about Model Home 2020
VELUX will build two zero carbon homes, in Rothwell, Kettering in 2010. Located within the second phase of the Bovis Homes’ Charter Park development to the South of Rothwell, the three and four bed semi detached properties have been designed to deliver a 70% reduction in carbon emissions with the remaining 30% of carbon offset by allowable solutions. The homes will be open plan and incorporate high levels of daylight, natural ventilation and renewable technologies. VELUX intends the scheme to act as a standard for future sustainable homes and new communities in Kettering and beyond. It has designed the homes to compliment modern lifestyles and substantially reduce carbon emissions while remaining profitable and simple to replicate for the mass housebuilder.

More about VELUX Company Ltd
VELUX believe that new and existing homes should conform to a sustainable living agenda. However this should not be at the detriment to either living standards or the health and well-being of a building’s occupants. Sustainable living should embrace modern lifestyles and the changing needs of society, while providing a building enclosure that encourages a healthy indoor climate. The use of natural daylighting and ventilation is prerequisite to a healthy lifestyle and the use of secure renewable technology such as solar thermal is a commonsense approach to low energy building solutions.
