Council backs Manor Park leisure project

04 November 2009

The Manor Park leisure centre proposals have generated a great deal of public interest over the past few months. The Council has listened to people’s concerns and major changes have been made to the designs following public consultation.

As so many members of the Policy & Resources Committee were unable to take part in the debate due to conflicts of interest, the Manor Park leisure project was considered at a meeting of the full Council on Monday 2 November. This was to enable as many Councillors as possible to discuss the future of the project.

At that meeting East Northamptonshire Council decided to go ahead with the Manor Park project.

Councillor Sue Homer, Vice Chairman of the Council, said:
“We’ve listened to what local people have said about the project, and major changes have been made to the designs. We have also agreed in principle an outline design at the Manor Park site that means the Rugby Club will be able to keep a 1st team pitch next to the clubhouse. Now we have something that most local sports and theatre groups can support, and as the project progresses we will continue to talk to the local community.

We also thought long and hard about the financial implications, but this exciting project will ensure that we provide high quality leisure facilities better able to serve the whole of the south of the district for decades to come. It will also pave the way for the regeneration of Rushden town centre.”
