Corby Picks Up It's Fifth Major Award In Under A Year

22 March 2010

Corby is continuing its winning streak as the Borough’s Parkland Gateway project picked up the Regeneration Project Award on Thursday 18th March 2010, at the Government Business Awards held at Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium, London.

Corby Borough Council beat off Devon County Council and Bexley Council to walk away with the top spot for breathing new life into the area with the Borough’s key regeneration project, Parkland Gateway, which includes the Corby East Midlands International Pool and the striking Corby Cube.

The iconic Corby Cube currently under construction, is a multi-purpose, landmark building which is a focal point for local information and services. The hi-tech Corby Cube houses a new library, a restaurant and a 445-seat theatre, the first in the world to be BREEAM rated ‘Excellent’. In addition, the five-storey building provides a one-stop shop for council services, an outdoor café area, a rooftop garden and has completely enhanced the Borough’s skyline.

Just next to the Corby Cube, Corby Borough Council has already opened the 50m Corby East Midlands International Pool. The state-of-the-art design of the building includes moveable floors and booms to allow both long and short course competition swimming as well as junior diving competitions.

The Government Business Awards aim to recognise the many examples of operational and business excellence taking place in local and central government. Entries from over 150 local authorities and other public sector bodies were considered for the awards.

This is one of five major awards that Corby has received in just a year. Corby Borough Council’s Lead Member for Regeneration, Cllr Jimmy Noble, comments:

‘The fact that we keep coming out on top at these awards just goes to show that we really are getting it right in Corby and people can see it. The Parkland Gateway project has made a real difference to the Borough and even before it is complete we are being celebrated for what we have achieved, which is just amazing.’

Simon Evans, Chief Executive of North Northants Development Company (NNDC), said:
“This award will help spread the word that the regeneration of Corby continues apace. From the outset, Corby Borough Council and its partners set ambitious goals for the town centre and it is great to see these being delivered in full.  The Parkland Gateway project has transformed civic facilities for the benefit of local people and deserves this national recognition..”
