Northamptonshire County Council and Corby Borough Council, through North Northants Development Company (NNDC), have secured £3million of funding to transform George Street in Corby, providing improved pedestrian access between the shopping area and the civic and leisure area of the town.
The improvements will complement the Willow Place shopping centre, new Corby East Midlands International Pool and Corby Cube development, carrying the theme of revitalisation throughout the length of George Street.
Plans for the scheme have now gone on display at 66 Corporation Street in Corby as well as in the borough council’s one stop shop in George Street.
The public is also being invited to talk through any concerns or questions they may have about the changes at the display in 66 Corporation Street on the following dates:
• Wednesday, December 16, 2009, 10am to 5pm
• Thursday, December 17, 2009, 2pm to 8pm
Leaflets outlining the proposals have been hand-delivered to the properties fronting George Street and further leaflets are available in the one stop shop and at the swimming pool. The leaflet contains a section for comments and these can be returned to the freepost address until January 8, 2010.
Cllr Heather Smith, county council cabinet member for environment growth and transport said: “We have recently seen Corby transformed with fantastic new buildings created, greatly rejuvenating the town centre. These new proposals will contribute enormously in giving Corby the town centre it deserves.
“Corby has shown that it really is on the up, going from strength to strength, and I’m sure that it will continue to attract investment, triggering significant economic growth.”
Leader of Corby Borough Council, Cllr Pat Fawcett, said:
"The changes to George Street are the next steps in transforming Corby’s town centre into a vibrant public area. Already we have opened our 50m international pool and are currently watching the iconic Corby Cube take shape, this funding for George Street will open up these developments to residents, link the town through to the new rail station and overall add to the regeneration of the area."
Simon Evans, chief executive of NNDC, said,
"This project will ensure Corby town centre continues to be transformed and will act as further encouragement for private investors and employers looking at the town. The programme of improvements is extensive and will make a real difference to every day life in the town centre. We urge everyone to take this opportunity to see the plans and tell us what they think."
All residents and traders will be kept informed about the progress of the project and the partners will seek to minimise inconvenience to them while the construction takes place, although the significant nature of this construction project there will inevitably be some disruption.
