Works on Horsemarket are now completed providing an improved pedestrian environment for shoppers and businesses. New bus stops have been installed and the bus service has been improved providing greater coverage of the town and more direct and frequent buses. The area is now a key drop-off and collection point for people visiting the town. The parking provision has been improved including additional disabled parking bays and an evening only taxi rank available for use between 8pm and 6am every night.
The Horsemarket area is benefitting from further investment on the derelict Hogs Head site, that has blighted the Horsemarket area for more than a decade. The long awaited demolition and site clearance of the former pub buildings has enabled partners to bring forward a new proposal for how it might be redeveloped. The prominent town centre site has planning permission for a mixed use scheme based on retail, leisure and hotel uses, but with the potential for alternative uses subject to planning permission. It is proposed that the development will provide a destination facility on the recently redeveloped Horsemarket.
