An integral part of green infrastructure for the North Northamptonshire growth area, the Greenway project focuses on the development of a network of pedestrian and cycle routes linking green spaces to each other as well as the town centre.
The Greenway will link open spaces together with opportunities for informal recreation and alternative means of transport to services and facilities. The project will also provide safe routes that young people need to walk and cycle to school. The project proposes utilising the disused Rushden-Higham brand railway link to connect County wildlife sites, school playing field and other open space collectively known as the Green Wedge.
Phase 1 of the Greenway has involved constructing a walking and cycling route linking the towns of Higham Ferrers and Rushden. A new cycle route has been created along the old railway line from the High Street, Rushden to Crown Way. It makes use of the existing cycle-way from the High Street to Washbrook Road and provides a new tarmac cycle-way to Rushden Community College across Spencer Park. Phase 1 of the project launched in March 2011.

Ultimately the aim is to extend the network of paths and Greenaways to local towns and villages and assist the modal shift away from the car into safer more green methods of transport. Furthermore, these opportunities will help towards keeping the public active and improving health within the local area.
