The objective of the scheme was to create an attractive town square at the heart of Irthlingborough that is full of character, provides a focal point for residents and visitors and sets a precedent for the future of urban renewal for the whole district.
The old town centre was typified by fast traffic, low footfall due to the unpleasant surroundings and low shopfront traffic resulting in empty units and low-ticket outlets.
Completed work includes:
- New speed tables to comply with the 20mph zone and provide distinctive gateway features to the High Street.
- Introduction of pedestrian crossings at several points.
- Enhancement of the town square and roundabout including improved parking.
- A whole new look for the Rest Gardens.
Conceived in partnership with local community groups, these improvements have enhanced access to the town, inspired greater pedestrian use and encouraged local retailers to invest in shop frontages.
This Growth Funded project has not only revitalised the economic outlook of the High Street but also helped to restore civic pride in Irthlingborough.
